what to expect

What is scarwork

ScarWork is a specialist gentle manual modality that works with scar tissue to improve appearance and tissue health post surgery.

ScarWork stimulates the body’s healing process, improves mobility, eases tightness, reduces sensitivity, pain & numbness & improves neural connection.

ScarWork focuses on treating the underlying fascia, dermis, and adhesions. The visible scar we see is often the tip of the iceberg, and scar tissue can form in areas away from the scar itself, therefore we work in holistic way to release restrictions including compensating areas of the body.

emotions/trauma

Receiving ScarWork might bring up emotions, trauma and anxieties, which are all normal responses to have. We can talk through options of how to build up to receiving the work, and we don’t have to work directly on the scar during our first session. We can begin with massage in other areas or fascial work in the surrounding area. It can be common for emotional responses to arise when working with scars and this is totally welcome in the space. We will talk through at the start of the session how I can best support you and your emotional processing if you are triggered and need support.

  • “As a trans person healing from a chest masculinization surgery with some complications, Manna has helped me to gain greater awareness of where I am holding trauma in my body, even years post-op. Our sessions are slowly allowing me to embrace & accept "flaws" and find beauty in my body. Manna's presence is warm and gentle, she makes me feel safe and valued, in a trauma-informed and non-judgemental environment. While I am usually hypersensitive and on edge, if I'm getting a massage from Manna I often enter a state of such deep relaxation that I sometimes fall asleep! :) 10000/10 recommend this special care worker in mtl <3”

  • “It can be hard to synthesize the complex benefits of Scarwork and working with Manna for the past 2.5 years. What I have found in this work is multifaceted - healing of tissue, fascia, memories, feeling and sometimes sheer instinct - made evident both in the physical touch and deep emotional witnessing found in this practice. It is common to speak of traumatic birth experiences, but I am reminded of the depth and courage required to be transformed by such undoing and re-emerging through the threshold of birth and early motherhood; scarwork offers a complexity to accompany the ancient knowing that wounds and scar tissue can bear for the body. Manna's dedication and growth as a practitioner alongside you is something to behold, and I am so blessed to learn more about myself, and what this incredible body is capable of, through this Scarwork healing modality.”

  • “Manna seems to effortless juggle the precarious and ever shifting details of intersecting needs. Accessibility, community, inclusivity, equity and more: she's going above and beyond to offer amazing support for scar massage with a trauma informed lens. Her depth of care flows through her incredible touch work and I'm overjoyed to have access to trans specific scar care support!”

  • "Manna was amazing for supporting my c-section scar recovery. I found it so helpful to have someone regularly check in on my scar progression and healing, and have that professional support that can be so hard to get as a postpartum mother. She was always kind, compassionate and intuitive. I also love how she transitioned from work focusing on the c-section scar (and incredibly helpful the epidural scar) but then transitioned more and more to healing and releasing tension in my hips and pelvis, which has supported my overall recovery and feeling good in my body. I am now 8.5 months postpartum and am so happy with how flat and light my c-section scar is, and often get compliments on it from other health professionals, and I truly believe it would not be as healed without Manna's scar work."

  • “I recommend Manna’s work to anyone who is seeking this type of care - I believe allowing us as trans people space to connect with our bodies in positive ways post surgery is such a blessing and something I didn’t necessarily anticipate finding, I only did over 2 years after I had surgery. Manna is thoughtful and wonderful to work with.”
